I mentioned the other day that there was a pattern release coming, well here it is!
Our popular grow-with-me harem pants pattern, P is for Pirate pants, is now available in a newborn to 6 months size and it’s available for pennies! (if your little is bigger than 6 months, check out our P is for Pirate Pants pattern, it is a one-size grow-with-me pattern that fits from around 6 months to four years-ish)
I sewed these little samples up with the hand printed fabrics that I made last week and I love how they turned out.
OK, enough prattle, let’s get to it!
You will need:
- Grow-with-me baby harem pants pattern (NB to 6 months).
- 1/4 a meter of knit fabric (Cuffs and waistband need to be a blend with some lycra, spandex, or elastane so the pants will stay up. The rest of the pants can be any knit you like, great for up-cycling t-shirts and things 🙂
To start, lay the pants pieces right sides facing and sew the center back and front seams.
Then rearrange the pants so they look like the pic above and sew the crotch seam.
For the waistband, fold it right sides facing, with the stretch of the fabric running crosswise and sew as shown.
Do the same with the cuffs.
Fold one cuff back on itself so that the seam is in the middle.
With the pants still inside out, insert the cuff into the ankle of the pants lining up the raw edges and sew, gently stretching the cuff to fit the pants ankle.
Repeat this process with the other cuff and the waistband.
Turn right side out, and then your done. Super quick and easy right?
Fold the cuffs and waistband down for a newborn, and adjust the length as they get older.

Do you think this style of pants would work with a cotton flannel? Just looking for something with a bit more warmth.
Hi, they need a bit more stretch than a flannel, but sweatsuit fleece would work well if you needed more warmth

Do you think it would work as well if I made the fold on the opposite side of the leg pattern piece? The one that ends in the crotch part? That way the seams are on the side, not in the centers?
Absolutely, just square up the top of the seam so sews nicely onto the waistband 🙂

make sure you use something super stretchy for the waistbands and cuffs – some ribbing would even work well 🙂
How do I sew the ankle cuffs on if they won’t fit over the arm of my machine? Suggestions for cuff material? I have very little stretchy fabric experience.
Hi, something nice and stretchy for the cuffs – something like a rib knit (like you find on the ankles and neck bands of sweat shirts) or a nice stretchy cotton/lycra (like leggings are made out of). for sewing on the cuffs the trick is to sew them with the circle of fabric (the ankle of the pants) facing up, with your machine foot on the cuff on the inside.

Oh my goodness, thank you! I don’t know how I didn’t come across that. I am just getting into sewing knits after 20 years. I am practicing with upcycling shirts into rompers and have been sewing the cuffs down open then closing the whole side seems from wrist to ankle. It works but this will be much more finished looking. I’m excited I found your blog.
No problems – funnily enough it took me a really long time to work that out too!
My only teacher was my mom and my own experimenting. I wish i had the time to swing by a store for some stretchy fabric to try this with.
Probably a silly question, but I am worried the little leg cuffs are too tight (although with every baby I have, I am shocked at how tiny they are haha). Laying flat, how wide should the little leg cuffs be? I wish I could post the pictures, I whipped up three during nap the last two days and I am IN LOVE!
Hi, Laying flat the little leg cuffs are around 6.5cm wide. If you are worried, you can always make the cuffs out of something super stretchy like a bit of ribbing. I am a bit the same way with newborns – I look at my kids and find myself thinking ‘no way, they were never that small!’ 🙂
Well I think I may have sewn with a bit too much of a seam allowance, since they are measuring 6.2/3 cm wide. There is definitely stretch, but not a ton. I am debating whether I should whip up new leg cuffs now and add a little extra room, or wait and see if they are spacious enough for baby. I have a feeling they will be fine but they may be more comfortable with more room too, thanks for responding!

Should the main fabric have some stretch to it, or would it work with a 100% cotton with no stretch? I live in a country town and the fabric supply is limited – or can u suggest a good (quick and cheap) online fabric supplier?

The main fabric definitely needs some stretch to it. Something with a bit of lycra or spandex in it will get you the longest wear (as in they will fit for the longest) but anything with stretch will work for the main part. A good source of knits (if fabric supply is scarce) is t-shirts. One that you don’t wear or something from a thrift shop that you can chop up. Best of luck.

Hi, you need a knit with some lycra, spandex or elastane. Something similar to what you would use for leggings.

Do you use a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch for making these?
Hi, you can get away with straight stitch for the side and crotch seams, but definitely zigzag for attaching the cuffs and waistband

Hi and thanks so much for the pattern! I made my first pair last night after our little guy went to sleep! Super quick and easy and it’s only the second thing I’ve made with jersey (the first was a simple hat). Sewing the little leg cuffs on required a bit of maneuvering, but worked out fine! Wanted to let you know though that I think the print size test box in inches should be 5in rather than 4…the 8cm box measures 8cm though, so I know it really printed out actual size. Thanks again!

All you have to do is subscribe to the newsletter by following the link to the newsletter in the post above. You will then receive an email asking you to confirm your email address. Hi Liza, To get the pattern you need to subscribe to the newsletter. After you have subscribed to the newsletter you will receive the link to the pattern.
I am having trouble with figuring out how to make the cuffs ‘seamless’ so when they are folded up on the finished pant you can’t see any seams… do you have a video of this part? So confused. Lol

Love this Pattern ! How do I print it so that the test boxes are the required size?
Hi Janet, save the file to your computer then open it with adobe acrobat and print it at 100% or ‘no scaling’. If you print it from your browser or from a different device you might have troubles with sizing.

Is this pattern designed to be printed on regular letter paper? Or longer paper? it’s cutting off just the bottom border, and I’m afraid it’ll be off if I use the patter with the bottom border cut off. 😦

Hi! I’m trying to make these pants. I’ve downloaded the pattern but I want to make sure that when I print the patten since your based out of Australia is your paper size different than that In the US? Our paper size is 8.5×11. Do I need to print it on larger paper? Thank you!
Hi, Thanks for your message, you do not need to use different paper. Just check that it is printing at 100% or ‘actual size’ and it will print just fine.

Yes they are great for cloth diaper babies. If bubs is getting towards the top of the size range probably best to go up to the next size though.

I downloaded the pattern and printed it out. The sample square is not the size it says. I tried adjusting the printer and it’s still not right. Can I still use it the way it is?
Hi Evelyn, If you use the pattern with the when the square is not printing at the right size the pattern will not come out at the right size and may not fit. Most problems with printing to the right size are normally fixed by making sure you are opening the pattern in acrobat reader and not in the browser (which is where it normally opens automatically). Then by making sure your printer is set to print ‘actual size’ or 100%. If this does not sort it out please feel free to email me directly at liz@threadfaction.com and I can troubleshoot with you.
