5 min leggings for bigger kids [Tutorial]

Just a quick post today to round out my crazy series on turning socks into pants for babies.

The original post in this series (posted years ago) got a lot of people trying it out, and one of the ideas that I saw on a sewing thread (which isn’t up anymore to link to), was adding an extension to the waistband so that they fit bigger kids.

Well… now that I have bigger kids, I thought I would give this one a try too.

This is my wiggly three year old H in her sock leggings 🙂

I won’t go through a step-by-step on these, basically the legs are made with a pair of ladies knee high socks in the same manner as the original post, and the waistband is added in the same way as the second post.

I used part of another pair of socks to make the waistband, but you could also use some cotton lycra knit fabric (make sure it has plenty of stretch), and then just add it in exactly the same way.

These pants, as a side note, also fit my (admittedly skinny) 5 year old.

I made her a pair of black ones, and attached some soft, inch wide, black elastic to the top with a zigzag stitch instead of the waistband. The bottom of the leg hits a couple of inches under the knee and they look like running leggings, really cute!

Sadly the weather here is unbearably hot (31 degrees by 8 am this morning) so no pictures of those are going to be available for some time 😦
